A TV over the fireplace, without the neck strain

The space above a mantel is the most requested — and most often botched — spot in the house. Two things matter more than anywhere else: heat and height. A working gas or wood fireplace can push hot air up the wall, and a TV hung too high forces you to look up for the whole movie.

Before we drill, we check what's behind the surround (framed drywall chase, brick, or stone veneer), how warm the wall gets above the mantel, and how high the screen will sit from your couch. Then we recommend a tilt or pull-down style bracket so the picture points at your eyes, not the ceiling. The over-fireplace add-on is $60 on top of normal labor.

How we do it

  1. Look inside the chase

A quick inspection tells us if there's wood framing to anchor into or masonry behind the drywall.

  2. Check the heat

If the wall above the mantel gets too hot to keep your hand on after the fireplace has run, a TV shouldn't go there — we'll say so.

  3. Set the lowest safe height

As close to the mantel as clearance allows, then angled down.

  4. Hide the wires

In-wall concealment through the chase when it's framed; a paintable cover when it's masonry.

Questions about over-fireplace TV mounting

Is it bad to put a TV over a fireplace?

It's fine if the wall stays cool enough and the screen isn't too high. Many manufacturers list a maximum operating temperature around 95–104 °F in their manuals — we check against yours.

My fireplace is stone. Can you still do it?

Yes. Stone and brick take masonry anchors; we drill with carbide or diamond bits and use sleeve anchors sized for the load.

Can the TV come down to eye level?

Pull-down mantel mounts exist and work well, but they're a special order. Ask when you book and we'll quote the exact model.
