VESA and weight limits, explained simply

Updated October 4, 2026 · TV Mounting Auburn AL

Two numbers decide whether a wall mount fits your TV: the VESA pattern and the weight. Both are in your TV's manual and usually on a sticker on the back.

VESA pattern

VESA is the standard square or rectangle of threaded holes on the back of the TV, written in millimeters: width × height. Common patterns:

  • 100×100 or 200×100 — small TVs (32–43″)
  • 200×200 — many 43–55″ TVs
  • 300×300 or 400×300 — many 55–65″ TVs
  • 400×400 — many 65–85″ TVs
  • 600×400 and larger — very large TVs

A mount lists the range it supports, e.g. "200×200 to 600×400." Your TV's pattern must fall inside it. Also check the bolt size (usually M6 or M8) — the right screws normally come with the mount.

Weight

Use the TV's weight without the stand. The mount's rating must be higher — ideally with a good margin, especially for full-motion arms, which put extra leverage on the wall when extended.

The wall is half the equation

A bracket rated for 150 lb is only as strong as what it's bolted into:

  • Wood studs + lag bolts: very strong; the usual choice.
  • Metal studs: need toggle anchors — see our metal stud guide.
  • Brick and concrete: masonry anchors — brick guide.
  • Drywall alone: not for TVs, whatever the anchor packaging says.

Curved and odd-shaped backs

Some TVs have curved or recessed backs where the VESA holes sit deep. Spacers (often included with the mount) bring the bracket arms level with the holes so the TV doesn't hang crooked.

Size ratings

Mounts also list a screen-size range. That's about the bracket's width and the TV's balance — a small bracket under a huge, light TV can still be a bad idea.
