Fixed, tilt or full-motion — which mount?

Updated October 4, 2026 · TV Mounting Auburn AL

There are three kinds of TV wall mount. Picking the right one is mostly about where you sit and how high the TV will be.

Fixed (flat) mounts

The TV hangs flat, about 1–1.5 inches off the wall.

  • Best for: TVs at eye level, straight in front of the couch.
  • Pros: slimmest look, simplest install, cheapest ($39 with us).
  • Cons: no angle adjustment, harder to reach ports behind the TV.

Tilt mounts

The TV angles down (usually up to 10–15°), sitting about 2–3 inches off the wall.

  • Best for: TVs mounted higher than eye level — bedrooms, over fireplaces, rooms with tall furniture under the screen.
  • Pros: cuts glare from windows and ceiling lights; makes a high TV comfortable.
  • Cons: a little deeper off the wall than fixed. ($59)

Full-motion (articulating) mounts

An arm lets the TV pull out, swing side to side and tilt.

  • Best for: corners, open-plan rooms you watch from two places, off-center studs.
  • Pros: the most flexible; easy access to ports.
  • Cons: bulkier, more leverage on the wall, needs careful stud anchoring and leveling after hanging. ($89)

How to choose in 20 seconds

  1. Will the screen center be near your seated eye level? → Fixed.
  2. Will it be noticeably higher (bedroom, fireplace)? → Tilt.
  3. Do you watch from more than one spot, or is it a corner? → Full-motion.

Three details people forget

  • Depth adds up. A tilt or full-motion mount plus a thick TV can stand 4–6 inches off the wall. Over a narrow hallway or beside a door, that matters more than the angle.
  • Ports and cables. With a fixed mount, plugging in a new game console means lifting the TV off its bracket. If you swap devices often, a tilt mount's extra gap or an arm saves frustration.
  • Glare. A window opposite the TV is usually solved by a few degrees of tilt, not by curtains.

Check the fit

Every mount lists a VESA range (the hole pattern on the back of the TV) and a weight limit. Both must cover your TV — see VESA and weight limits. If you already own a mount that fits, we'll use it at no bracket charge.
